HCAP for May 10, 2020

Holy Cross at Prayer for Sunday, May 10, 2020, the Fifth Sunday of Easter.

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel Sentence
“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—” (1 Peter 2:2)

“Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”” (Acts 6:1–4)

Even this side of Jesus’ resurrection, we still bicker and fight amongst ourselves. The early church was no different. The Hellenists were Greek converts to Christianity, and they were complaining that their widows were not being cared for properly. There was no retirement program then. It was up to the community to care for its own. And so the church adapted. They made sure that there were men who would be called deacons (literally “servants”) who would care for the physical needs of the people. This was so that prayer and the ministry of the word would not be neglected. Thanks be to God that He gives so many different talents and abilities to His Church!

Prayer for Holy Cross Member
Let your grace be upon Jean, O Lord, and teach her to hope in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Week
O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
