FRIDAY (July 3, 2020)
In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Gospel Sentence
“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:39)
Reading
““Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:34–39)
Meditation
Christ demands more than a comfortable Christianity. In fact, to be a follower of Christ is probably going to be highly unpopular. To be a follower of Christ may mean losing friends. To be a follower of Christ may mean that family members turn against you and even shun you. To be a follower of Christ means giving up one’s self—one’s very life and all that goes with it. Christ demands are high. He will settle for nothing less than one’s life—one’s body and soul. And in Christ we have true life.
