SATURDAY (August 29, 2020)
Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist
In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gospel Sentence
“He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:15-16)

Reading
“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:13-18)

Meditation
Peter confesses Christ as the promised Messiah. Peter’s confession is the Church’s confession. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. God is the source of all life. In fact, He raises His Son from the dead. He gives us new life too so that we might proclaim Peter and the Church’s confession to the world.

O Lord, in Holy Baptism you put your Name upon Don. Bless him now with the forgiveness of sins and a firm trust in you. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer For the Feast of The Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist
Almighty God, You gave Your servant John the Baptist to be the forerunner of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in both his preaching of repentance and his innocent death. Grant that we, who have died and risen with Christ in Holy Baptism, may daily repent of our sins, patiently suffer for the sake of the truth, and fearlessly bear witness to His victory over death; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
