Gospel Sentence
“…Immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”” (Matthew 14:27)

Reading
“And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”” (Matthew 14:28–33)

Meditation
Jesus has walked on the water in the midst of a great storm. It is dark, the waters are are churning and the disciples are terrified, except that they hear the familiar and soothing voice of Jesus. Impetuous Peter wants to join Jesus, wants to believe, and so he does as he climbs out of the boat and begins to walk towards Jesus. Things are looking good until Peter he looks away and sees the swirling darkness of the waters, and he begins to sink. But listen carefully to Peter’s words, “Lord save me.” These humble words are words of faith and hope.

Prayer for the Feast of St. Mary, Mother of Our Lord
Almighty God, You chose the virgin Mary to be the mother of Your only Son. Grant that we, who are redeemed by His blood, may share with her in the glory of Your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
