Bible Class – “2 Timothy 3” led by Pastor John-Paul Meyer on November 15, 2020.
2 Timothy 3:1-17 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5 – THE MORAL CONDITION OF THE WORLD
1 Why do we believe that we are living in the last days, the time near the end of the world?
2 Which sins mentioned by Paul are especially common today? Why are these a peril to Christians?
6. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always leaning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
2 TIMOTHY 6-13 – THE ATTITUDE OF THE WORLD TOWARD THE CHURCH
3 What false teachers and cults have been working actively in homes and among women?
4 Why do so many people believe the ridiculous claims of false teachers and religious quacks?
5 Are Christians still persecuted today?
6 How does the world show that it hates the true believers?
7 Why is persecution a blessing to the church?
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salivation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
2 TIMOTHY 14-17 – THE SOURCE OF THE CHRISTIAN’S POWER
8 Who taught Timothy the Scriptures (2 Timothy 1:2,5)
9 How long should one continue to study the Bible? Why?
10 In what respects is the Bible different from all other books?
11 How do we know that every word in the Bible was written by divine inspiration (2 Peter 1:21; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 2 Thessalonians 2:15; John 5:39)?
12 Why should we hold firmly to the doctrine of verbal (the very words and not just the thoughts) and plenary (each and every word) inspiration?
THE BELIEVER’S SECURITY IN AN EVIL WORLD
Why may we rely upon every statement in the Bible as absolute truth, even when it foretells what will happen in future times? We have the clearest answer to this question in our text when it makes the claim that it is the inspired Word of God. We also have a practical proof that this claim is true. The chapter that we are studying pictures conditions in the world just as they are today. The Holy Spirit showed Paul what dangers would threaten Christians as the world approached its end.
